Penn State DuBois Wins Back to Back USCAA Baseball National Championships
DUBOIS, Pa. -- Tournament MVP Toner Corl went 3-for-4 with a tournament record seven RBIs as Penn State DuBois defeated Bryant & Stratton (Albany) 12-7 in the winner-take-all United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships game on Thursday night.
Bryant & Stratton forced the winner-take-all game behind a complete game four-hitter by Zach Mattos as the Bobcats used a 3-for-5 performance from Jion Cras with two RBIs to defeat Penn State DuBois 6-1.
The victors got on the board in the top of the first on a two-run single by Vince McDowell. Bryant & Stratton responded with three runs in the bottom of the second on a three-run blast by Martison Brunken.
Penn State DuBois regained the lead in the top of the third on a two-run home run by McDowell for a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Corl provided some insurance with a grand slam in the fifth inning as Penn State DuBois pushed the lead to 8-3. His run scoring single in the seventh put his squad up 9-4.
In the eighth, McDowell started with a solo home run to put them ahead 10-6. Later in the inning Corl smashed a two-run double to break the tournament record for RBIs in a game as Penn State DuBois took a 12-6 lead.
The prior record of RBIs in a game was six done twice, last in 2016 by Spencer Henn on Cincinnati-Clermont. McDowell also tied a record for home runs in a game with his two blasts last done by Michael Malfeo in 2015 for Illinois Tech.
Joining Corl with three hits in a game was McDowell going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Isaac Stouffer was 2-for-6 and Thayne Morgan was 2-for-2 for the multi-hit Dubois players. Brandon Orsich picked up the win throwing 6.1 innings of relief with four strikeouts.
Bryant & Stratton was paced by John Loschiavo with three RBIs going 2-for-5, while Brunken was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
